General Meeting - All About Pearls - May, 2010
PEARLS ARE BEAUTIFUL
Featuring the May 18, 2010 program by Evelyn Velie
Jerry Dunphy, a long-time TV newsman always opened up his news program with the phrase, "From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California, a good evening". If
you stop to think about it, the Sierra Pelona Rock Club is like that.  We collect and study objects from the desert to the sea and from the mountains to the forests.  This is why
our programs are so diverse - this is why we had the excellent program on pearls presented by our member, Evelyn Velie, on May 18th.

Who knew there are natural and cultured pearls?  Who knew about the different colors and qualities of pearls?  Who knew there are salt water and fresh water pearls?  Many
members brought their pearls to the meeting, and Evelyn classified them.  Evelyn then gave us an excellent Powerpoint presentation on pearls, how they are formed. and
how they are harvested and sold.   The Mississippi River connection to pearls worldwide was a complete surprise.

The following photos are inadequate to describe the total program - it was
EXCELLENT!   At the end of the program, we all saw photos of the Club's newest claim for Trona
Onyx, and there were samples given to anyone who wanted them.  A lot of hard work went into the claim from Diane Southwell, Bill & Heidi Webber, Ron & Bonnie, and a
huge THANK YOU to Paul and Tom Kinney for use of their power equipment at our new claim and for bringing in slabs they cut on their own saw just for the meeting on the
18th.  This unselfish generosity and hard work by members is the glue that holds this club together and makes it so enjoyable.

members and guests.
This is the "Mississippi River Connection" used
worldwide for cultured pearls.  Do you know what
this is?  Hint:  It is not a pearl (yet).
What would you give to have these pearls?  These
were brought to the meeting by one of our members.
What would you give for these pearls brought in for display?  Beautiful.  At the
lower right are shells that display the nacre inside them,

pearls to the ladies.
